Citizens of Ukraine travelled abroad twice as much in 2017 as compared to the year 2000. The number of foreign citizens who visited Ukraine increased by 120% during the same period.

Ukrainians travel twice as much

• In the year 2000, 13.4 million tourists travelled to foreign countries from Ukraine and 6.4 million tourists visited the country, according to statistics.
• In 2017, 26.4 million of Ukrainians travelled abroad and 14.2 million foreigners visited Ukraine.

Most tourists arrange their own accommodation and tickets, according to Ukrstat. Just over 2 million travellers used agents in Ukraine to arrange their trips in the year 2000, among them 377 thousand of foreigners. The majority of trips were locals visiting other places in Ukraine, however (1.35 million). Only 285 thousand of locals used agents for foreign trips (out of 13.4 million total visitors who went overseas), which is about 2%.

In 2017 the number of foreigners using agents dropped significantly: Only 39,000 foreigners used travel specialists in Ukraine to book their trips.

Among locals there was an opposite trend: 2.8 million of adventurers used assistance of specialists and 2.29 million of them travelled internationally. It’s over 8% out of the total number of Ukrainian citizens who went abroad as tourists, as compared to 2% in 2000.

Obviously, trips to other countries became more popular and usually fresh tourists buy a tour through an agent. It’s a package that usually includes accommodation, breakfast, airplane tickets and airport transfers. Prices for foreign trips start at US$130 (not a misprint) for locations such as Egypt, which is affordable even with low local salaries. Currently the average wage in the country is around USD 323, according to April 2018 data.

Domestic travellers, however, don’t use travel agents to book trips as much as before.

• In 2000, 1.35 million Ukrainians engaged an agent to book a vacation.
• In 2017, only 476 thousand local trips were booked through agents.
