Investigative report from Sunday Night (Channel 7, Australia) revealed the growing popularity of dating in Ukraine and its recognition as the matchmaking capital of the world. In its edition from 14 October 2018, reporter Matt Doran and the team followed Australian and American men seeking love in the largest European country and a former Soviet Union republic.

An affair with a foreigner: Why not?

Ukraine “has become the go-to destination for Western men seeking Eastern European brides”, summarized Sunday Night‘s note on its website with the recording of the broadcast.

The segment under the title “A Foreign Affair” raises the typical questions people ask when hearing about this type of dating, such as:

• Why would a man seek to meet someone in another country?
• Do these men go to Ukraine because they couldn’t get a local woman?
• Isn’t there something improper about men wanting to be involved with women from a foreign country?
• Why do Ukrainian women want to date foreign men?

And so on.

The men interviewed on the program vary in age and come from different backgrounds. They explain that they simply feel lonely and want someone to share their lives with. (Aren’t we all?)

The reason why Ukrainian women want to date foreigners is also clearly spelled out: The lack of available men.

Ukraine has some of the world’s worst male to female ratios on the planet, with only 86 men for 100 women. Once people pair up, as most grownups tend to do, there is even less chance for single girls to find a match: Eligible bachelors are in a minority with many women trying to woo the same potential boyfriend.
