Before we start talking about what is in the minds of Ukrainian women seeking to marry a man from another country, let’s make a very clear disclaimer: The things I am talking about do NOT apply to pseudo-dating pay-per-letter websites, where men are charged for every message, photo, and video sent back and forth.

I have written an article on 20 tips for dating in Kiev, and a guy sent me a long story about his failure, complaining about “stupid” rules of male-female interaction in Ukraine. My disclaimer about PPL (pay per letter) sites was rule #20 in that post and he obviously didn’t read the article to the end, so now I am putting it ahead of the main text: PPL sites are scams!

They don’t have “Ukrainian women”; they have profile operators whose task is to make you spend money. For more details on that, see this post.

Now, we can talk about the minds of genuine Ukrainian girls seeking to marry a man from another country.

What do Ukrainian women have in mind when they decide to look for a marriage partner in another country?

There are lots of things in the minds of women from Ukraine who try to connect with foreign men online, with a view to build a serious relationship.

1. To get a social status of a married lady. This is the task #1, because a single female doesn’t have any social status in Ukraine, unless she is a daughter of a high-level politician or oligarch. Ukrainian women are getting the acceptable social status by being a wife and a mother, which is compulsory for any female aged 21+ to be seen as respectable. See it as having a job for a male in your society; if you don’t have a job, you are looked down upon, in a way. The same in Ukraine; if a lady has no partner, she is looked down upon; something’s wrong with her.
2. To become a wife and a mother. This is considered an essential condition of female happiness. Women believe that only by being a wife and a mother she can ever be happy. That’s imprinted in the culture.
3. To gain security and stability in life. Life in Ukraine is highly volatile and females wanting to have a family, which they believe to be absolutely necessary to become happy (see p.2), so they feel that by meeting a man from a more stable country, she will be able to achieve her goal of becoming a wife and a mother: Uncertain conditions are not conductive to having kids.

Usually foreigners think that Ukrainian women seek to marry foreign men to escape poverty in their country. It’s not entirely correct, although building a better life is a goal for all of us.

Many ladies from Ukraine have relatively high standards of life, own businesses, but they still look into finding a partner abroad. They do it because they believe that western men make better husbands, first of all, as well as (the same reason in reverse) that Ukrainian men make lousy partners.

Another reason is that there are more females in Ukraine than males, so it’s simply harder for ladies to find a match. When there are 86 men for 100 women, some girls are destined to stay single.
