According to polls, at least 12% of Ukrainians would like to work and live abroad. It’s not surprising: Wages in Europe are much higher than locally. However, there are a lot of scams by middle men offering foreign vacancies in exchange for cash. Thus, there are proposals to make it illegal to charge Ukrainian job seekers fees to find a position abroad.
How to stop “work abroad” scams in Ukraine?
Ukraine is becoming one of the countries that export cheap labour, predominantly to the European market. Wages in Ukraine are several times lower than in the countries of the European Union. Even Russian wages are much more lucrative, compared to Ukrainian, prompting job seekers to seek seasonal jobs there.
According to polls, as much as 5 million of Ukrainians would like to get higher wages and open to working elsewhere in nearby countries.
However, the market is flooded with fly-by-night operations charging Ukrainians fees for potential vacancies that never eventuate. To stop such scams, the parliament of Ukraine (Rada) is considering a draft law that would prohibit charging fees from prospective workers for giving them information about job openings abroad.
Fines for breaking this ban would be around 34-51 thousand hryvnia (USD 1,370-2,050) , Finance.ua reported.
- The top countries for seasonal jobs abroad are Poland, Russia, and Czech Republic.
The majority of Ukrainians who would like to move permanently think of the United States (82%) and Germany (78%).
