Ukrainian wages are the lowest within the geographical area of Europe. Even Russians earn 50% more.
The average monthly wage in Ukraine in May 2019 was 10,239 hryvnia (USD 401), according to Ukrstat. It’s way better than it was 5 years ago when average salaries dropped under $200, but it’s still far away from earnings of workers in the countries of European Union.
How much Ukrainians earn when working abroad
Such statistics is hard to gather, since many workers don’t have official employments contracts and get cash payments. Ukrainians are able to travel to Europe as tourists without visas since June 2017 and stay there for up to 90 days. This allows citizens of Ukraine to spend nearly 3 months abroad and if they are able to find a job, earnings could be higher than locally as home. Seasonal jobs like picking berries or harvesting fresh produce are suitable for this type of temporary employment.
Some citizens of Ukraine get official employment contracts and work visas in Poland, Czech Republic, and other nearby countries. But statistics on their wages are not accessible for an easy evaluation.
Finance.ua decided to find a way around such methodology problem and asked people online how much they have been earning abroad. The problem here, of course, is the possibility of answers being false, since some people simply click on any option to view the survey results. However, there are some trends in the online poll that are likely to point in the right direction, this is why it’s work a look.
