In the traditional family model it is a woman’s responsibility to do the home chores, while a man is required to provide. According to a recent survey, most Russians believe that a man should be the main provider, but what about the home chores?

Who should be doing the home chores? What Russian women and men think

Surprisingly, most Russians believe in sharing home chores: 85% of respondents in a recent survey supported this idea.

• Only 7% of respondents stated that it’s a woman’s responsibility, while 5% think a man should do it.
• 2% of participants feel who should be doing the chores depends on how busy each family member is.
• More ladies than guys support the idea that both a man and a woman should take care of the household: 89% of females vs. 81% of males.
• Among the group of those who think it’s a man’s job to take care of the household only 1% of females and 9% of males.
• 6% of guys and 8% of ladies think it is a woman’s job.

However, such a unity in the view regarding taking care of the household can be explained. In the traditional family model a woman’s job is to cook, clean, look after the kids, do grocery shopping, washing, and ironing, while a man’s responsibility if to do repairs such as fixing a leaking tab or painting the walls.

In many Russian families it is still the order of the things, where household chores are divided in masculine and feminine responsibilities.

In large cities though people tend to share jobs and husbands also sometimes cook and look after the kids when the wife is busy and cannot attend to it. Russian women call it, “helping with the household”.

Some ladies even put it on their list of desired qualities in a future partner, “would like him to help around the house”, rather than “we should share home chores”.
