The requirement to stay home pushed more Russians to use Internet to contact family and friends. April 2020 usage of Internet went up by 2% compared to February.
Internet to the rescue
In 2011 only 22% of Russians used Internet daily, but this month 71% of respondents in a recent survey said they utilize online communications practically every day.
Just two months ago in February 2020 there were 69% of daily users.
In total, 18% of respondents in the recent WCIOM poll stated they don’t use the world wide web. In 2011, 48% of respondents weren’t using Internet.
What do Russians use the Internet for?
- The two most popular reasons in April 2020 to login online is to communicate with friends and family, as well as read news: 89% in both categories.
- 78% of people use online banking.
- 77% of respondents engage in online entertainment: read books, watch movies, or pay games.
- 71% of people pay bills.
- 69% use it for learning and self-education.
- 60% utilized government services such as passport renewal or getting documents.
- 39% bought furniture and appliances.
- 26% purchased groceries, cleaning products, etc.
The poll was conducted by a way of a phone interview on 5 April 2020 among 1,600 respondents that were representative of the whole territory of the Russian Federation.
More women are online now than ever before
