How we met and fell in love

I am Liubov. (In Russian it means “Love”.)

With my second (and I hope the last) husband I met on the dating site Elenasmodels.

I never thought that such things are possible. I had the opinion that people come to dating sites with intentions that are far from marriage and serious intentions.

“Give it a try”

I uploaded the most regular photo into my profile and a really brief description of myself. Then I did nothing, waiting for my prince. Jason was the first and the only man with whom I talked on the site.

He is an engineer of cooling systems, worked in large international companies, then started his own business.

I am also an engineer, at the time I was working also for a large international gas and oil company. I had the most wonderful co-workers, the best managers, and excellent friends among my colleagues, but my personal life was in disarray, so I decided to “give it a try” and started talking to him. We had lots of themes in common, as well as even more things to argue about!

In about 3 months after the start of our communication we decided to meet in person on neutral grounds, in Dominican Republic. I was planning ways to retreat if things didn’t go as planned, and so was he.

From online dating to meeting in tropical paradise

I must say that already prior to our meeting Jason had started sending gifts to my kids and me to Moscow: Flowers, candies, and toys, trying to lay the path to my heart. I still keep all his cards (by the way, they were extremely useful for the immigration process as the proof of the relationship). He is still spoiling me with gifts till today.

We had been sharing our expectations and goals beforehand, because spending time just for fun wasn’t what either of us was looking for. He was looking for his woman — someone beautiful, smart, agreeable, wanting kids, a good housekeeper (with a minimum of two children of her own), and I was looking for “my man”.

Jason met me at the airport with flowers and a personal driver (he played a role in this story as well), and we went to a very beautiful hotel. We were feeling comfortable and excited about each other straight away, although each of us was trying to show off his or her best side (which means we weren’t truly ourselves at first).

So, we were talking, swimming, making friends with other tourists, eating lovely meals, and everything was just amazing.

Trouble in paradise

Everything was just perfect, until on the fourth day of our vacation he started feeling unwell.

He could not get out of bed — early in the morning on the fourth day his temperature went up to 40-41°C (104-105°F). He stopped eating and then drinking.

I was thinking, “What is going on?”

We didn’t even had a chance to get to know each other properly, and he was already unwell — maybe it was a sign we should call it quits?

I thought that maybe he was just pretending, so he could cut this vacation short and go home.

I constantly was checking his temperature, looking for signs of an illness, but there was nothing except the high temperature.

He was constantly trying to calm me down, saying that in 2-3 hours he should feel better, it’s nothing, he didn’t need a doctor, and especially not a Dominican doctor, he was a strong man, and everything would become better any minute.

And then things went really wrong.

Bed ridden

It was the fifths day of our vacation together. Jason was lying in bed practically all the time, sleeping, his body temperature would come down but straight away go up again. The next night he started coughing and complaining about chest pain.

I said we needed to call a doctor, but he strictly prohibited me to do that. He was adamant that he would fly to America and there he would go to reliable doctors.

Anyone who knows my husband will understand, if he made a decision, then it’s simply impossible to convince him otherwise… To cut the long story short, my pleas about the need to call a doctor were useless.

Getting to America

On the seventh day we both were supposed to fly back home: He was due to fly back to Florida and I was flying back to Moscow.

On the morning of the seventh day he could no longer get up and I didn’t know what to do.

I had to fly home and firstly get my kids from my mother, and secondly, get back to work, as my vacation had finished. Thirdly, my American visa had ran out by that time and I couldn’t accompany him to his home.

I was genuinely shaking because of this situation. The 12-hour flight back home seemed like an eternity, I wanted to find out how was his flight home and did he get to the hospital.

A dramatic turn of events changed a holiday romance into a life-or-death situation for Liubov and Jason.

“Mister, you are not flying”

Meanwhile, Jason was unable to simply walk… I gave the bracelet of the hotel to his driver and asked him to help Jason get on the flight to the States.

The driver took Jason from the hotel to the airport, wheel chaired him to and from the car, helped him to check in for the flight.

But the airline refused to let him on the flight: They thought he was drunk because he couldn’t walk or talk properly.

Somehow Jason managed to convince them that he was a USA citizen in need of an urgent medical attention. Thank goodness, he was allowed to board.

Car accident

Jason doesn’t remember being driven from the hotel or flying on the plane back to the States. Just some erratic brief moments.

Having landed at the airport Fort Lauderdale (Northern Miami), he got to his car. I think the airport personnel might have helped him. He was semi-unconscious, but he still got to the driver’s seat and drove off. However, he didn’t drive home, which was 3 hours away, but to the nearest hotel.

At the parking lot Jason crashed into another car. The driver called the police, there had been some commotion (I learned about it much later when bills from his insurance company arrived).

He doesn’t remember it either. In short, somehow Jason managed to book himself into a hotel and went to bed — totally exhausted, with high temperature and chest pain. He wasn’t eating or drinking.

“Your Jason is dying”

I had landed in Moscow, rang him to find out the latest details, and discovered that he was in a hotel, planning to visit a doctor soon… But he wasn’t not going and I kept ringing and texting him.

I had shared the situation with my mom.

My mother is a Doctor. From a capital “D”.

She told me straight away, “Your Jason is dying. If he doesn’t get medical help immediately, he will die any day, he has a really bad intoxication caused by some infection”. That’s exactly what she said, she didn’t beat around the bush.

And I thought: “No way! Just as I have met a decent man, he is now going to depart to a better world. My mom is exaggerating of course, now or soon everything will become just fine.”

It was his second day at the hotel and I managed to convince him to go to a doctor.

Jason gathered all the strength he had left, got into a taxi, as he couldn’t drive a car himself, and went to the nearest doctor.

The doctor told him that there was nothing too serious to be concerned about, just some infection, and put him under a drip to get some salty liquid into his veins. This doctor of course should lose his licence, as he let him go without getting him to hospital to get a proper treatment. But the liquid that got into his body helped him to hold on a little longer.

Jason returned to the hotel, told me that he was feeling better and soon would be driving home. It would had taken him 3 hours to get there.

But he didn’t do it straight away; he went to bed and that was it! The whole second, third and fought days at the hotel he was simply sleeping.

But he was still answering my phone calls and messages. This is how I knew he was still at the hotel.

He simply physically couldn’t get up and get going.

The nightmare continues

What could I do? How could I help? How could I save him?

I didn’t know any of his family or friends. I started calling to the hotel and begged them to call the ambulance, told them that the man in their hotel was dying, that he was lying there for four days.

But the hotel personnel didn’t do anything, they told me he was fine, he was just resting, and no one was going to call the ambulance, as it would be  too expensive (about 10 thousand dollars).

On the fifth day of Jason’s lying in the hotel, the name “Tyson” popped into my mind from his stories about his best friend. I found him on Facebook and wrote a message that his urgent help was needed, that his friend would die if he wasn’t immediately taken to a hospital.

In 2 hours I got a message from Tyson that his wife and himself were already on the way.

Phew!! I got a hope that this nightmare might have a happy ending.

When they arrived, the room door was unlocked and a putrid smell filled the room. Jason was lying on the bed talking to the walls and to himself. He was already unable to even get up to get to the toilet. Tyson and his wife basically carried him out and took him to a good hospital.

The doctors, once they saw his condition, put him under drips and inserted catheters immediately. After a quick check the doctor said that Jason may need an urgent kidney transplant, and Tyson said he would give his kidney.

Probability of a lethal outcome 93%

What happened to Jason?

Nothing but a very bad case of pneumonia. Both his lungs were full of liquid.

When the doctor pulmonologist saw the H-rays, he said, “I don’t know how you are breathing, there is no way for oxygen to get through at all.”

By the way, he saved Jason’s H-rays for students of medical schools.

We have a written medical diagnosis at home stating the probability of a lethal outcome was 93%. When a catheter was put in, the liquid coming out was black, he nearly had a complete kidney failure.

Jason was prescribed the strongest antibiotics.

All in all, everything ended happily. I don’t want to burden you with details of the consequences that lasted half a year (!).

A woman to die for

I was happy that he survived and he apparently was happy to have found me.

I have earned a million of imperishable brownie points, which I keep reminding him about.

Jason realized that a woman like this is to die for, asked me to marry him and brought me and my two kids to be with him in Florida, USA.

In a year we became parents to a baby boy Christopher.
