Ukrainians soon will be able to skip voting booths and simply press a button on their phones. The new electronic voting system allowing citizens to use smart phones and computers to cast their preferences should be legislated by the end of 2020, Finance.ua reported.
Presidential elections by phone
If the plan to put in place the legislation about electronic voting is completed by the third quarter of 2020 comes to fruition, Ukraine may become one of the first post-USSR countries where citizens elect a president on mobile phones.
The new Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, a former comedian whose surprise landslide victory amused the world’s politics in April 2019, may need to fight for re-election with citizens enabled to vote via an app.
The next presidential elections in Ukraine could be scheduled for 2024. The exact date is to be confirmed. Previous Ukrainian presidential elections occurred in 2014, 2010, and 2004.
The law about digital voting is due to be designed by the end of 2020 within the framework of development of the electronic democracy in Ukraine.
Identification of the voters will be done via the government’s system id.gov.ua.
When will the new system be available?
Certainly, the system will take some time to develop, but with Ukraine dubbed “the next India for IT outsourcing” this could happen sooner rather than later. The country has enough resources and skill to put in place a sophisticated structure. No certain time frames have been given at this stage.
Who knows, your Ukrainian bride may be able to choose the next leader of her homeland without leaving your comfortable home in Europe or America. Being a citizen, she will be still eligible to cast a vote. Even better, this could be done from any place in the world, should you choose to travel and see more of our amazing planet!
