Remember the times when it was possible to get land for free in the United States? Of course, not in your lifetime, but it was indeed possible in the age of the first settlers.
In Ukraine, it’s possible to get land for free today. Just like in Russia, by the way.
If you are surprised by such an opportunity and think more people should know about it, make sure you share this information using the social networking links on the bottom of this post. Also, ask your Ukrainian girlfriend if she knows about it! All links to the sources are below.
4 out of 5 Ukrainians are unaware they can get free land
- Nearly 79% of Ukrainians who participated in the online poll by Segodnya.ua are unaware they are eligible to get not just one but 5 pieces of land from the state for free.
- 5% of people reported they already took advantage of this offer.
- 15% of respondents reported that they have applied to get a plot, but were unsuccessful.
Did you know your Ukrainian bride could become a real estate owner so easily?
If not, this is something to consider when you are dating in Ukraine. In fact, she is not as short of means as you might have thought she was.
There are, of course, conditions attached and the procedure takes months to complete, because the property has to be properly measured and entered into the registry. But any plot that is not officially owned by someone else (and there are plenty, since real estate ownership in Ukraine is less than 20 years old, before that it was only the state that could possess it) can be claimed by anyone.
Ukrainians aged 18+ are able to get in total 5 plots sized over 2.2 hectares in total.
The procedure of obtaining such real estate is regulated by the article 81 and 121 of The Land Code of Ukraine. All you need is to apply and pay the fees for processing your application (5,000 hryvnia or USD 187).
5 plots that Ukrainians can get
Domik.ua explains the process a citizen of Ukraine has to undertake to become a land owner under this legislation.
These are 5 types of properties per person that could be granted:
- To build a house: from 0.10 ha (in cities) to 0.25 ha (in villages).
- To build a dacha (countryside home): 0.1 ha.
- For a farm: 2 ha.
- To grow vegetables, berries, fruit: 0.12 ha.
- For a garage: 0.01 ha.
Yes, each Ukrainian is able to apply and get free land today!
And you thought Ukrainians were so disadvantaged? Makes you rethink the whole situation, right?

And it’s not as hard as it used to be to live mostly off the land. You plant your fruit trees, bushes and vines the regular way. You plant your annual veggies in flower pots (container farming). Chickens lay 300 eggs a year their first year. Just one cow might be enough for butter and cheese. I saw lots of Abkhazians doing much of this. It’s no longer hard work because, ironically, small, cheap, modern appliances make it all easy. It’s a boring lifestyle though.
