Decline in population of Ukraine continues in the first half of 2017, statistics by Ukrstat show. The estimated population of Ukraine decreased by 51 thousand people in 5 months. The alarming gap between mortality and fertility rates is still present and keeps widening, with the number of deaths exceeding the number of births by over 70%.
How many people live in Ukraine: Resident population vs. total population
- The total population of Ukraine as of June 2017 is estimated at 42 million 482 thousand people.
- The largest populated area is the city of Kiev together with its region (2.928 + 1.731 = 4.659 million people in total). However, in statistics by Ukrstat these two areas are listed separately.
- Second is Donetsk region (over 4 million).
- The majority of highly populated areas are located in the eastern part of the country, including Dniper (Dnipropetrovsk), Kharkiv and Luhansk (each has more than 2 million residents).
- Lviv in the west and Odessa (Odesa) on the Black Sea are two other highly populated regions.
- Chernivtsi and Kirovohrad are the least populated regions with the number of residents below 1 million people.
- Resident and present population in low-density regions differ slightly, the gap between figures being no greater than 5 thousand. However, regions with a larger number of citizens show a huge discrepancy: The difference between de jure and de facto estimates can go up to 42 thousand people (for instance, in the City of Kyiv).
