Most people in Russia still think that a man should be the main provider in a family, a recent survey confirmed. And Russian men are more in favour of this than women.
Man the provider
Cultural views in modern Russia remind more of America in 1950s than of a 21-century society, but locals are proud of their traditional family values.
This is why it should come as no surprise that most people in Russia believe that a man should be the main provider in a family: 59% of locals support this view.
Men are more in favour of such view than Russian women: 65% of males think so vs. 54% of females. Younger people are less likely to support this idea: Only 53% of users agreed with that. The highest support of the idea “man the provider” is in the age group 35-44 (64%).
35% of respondents believe that both males and females should put equal efforts into earning money (29% of guys think so vs. 40% of ladies). Among the group aged 18-24, 44% of people support such view, while in the group aged 45-59 only 31% of participants supported this option.
Only 1% of people stated a woman should be the main provider, while further 3% ticked the option “it depends on the career stage of the person”.
Obviously, the requirement to work and contribute to the family’s budget is strongly linked to gender in minds of Russian respondents.
It is a fairly recent shirt in societal views. During the times of the Soviet Union (1922-1991) both males and females were required to work for the benefit of the society. The government provided free childcare and generous paid parental leave to mothers to encourage a quick return into the workforce, while at the same time stimulating childbirths via provision of homes to parents with kids and fines for those who didn’t have children.
