According to a recent survey, 57% of Russians think now is a bad time to make big purchases, which is more optimistic than a few months before. In April 2020, 76% of respondents supported this view.

Russians are getting more optimistic

People in Russia are getting more optimistic.

In a recent survey by WCIOM.ru only 57% of respondents stated that is was a bad time to make big purchases, while in April 2020 76% of participants took this view.

In general, during the last 7 years since November 2013, Russians got less inclined to make large purchases. At the end of 2013, 49% of respondents thought it was a bad time, while 37% of users believed it was a good time.

In November 2020 only 25% of users thought it was a good time to spend big. However, it’s still a much more optimistic feeling than in April of 2020, when only 11% of users indicated it could be a good idea to buy something expensive.

When asked about putting money in a bank as a deposit, 32% of respondents said they feel it’s a good time to do it, while 42% think the opposite. In January 2020 the dynamics was the other way around: 48% of participants thought it was a good idea to put money in a bank, while 32% of users thought it wasn’t.

In total, 68% of respondents believe now is the time to save for the future and spend as little as possible. 21% of users have a different view: Best is to spend wages quickly to buy the necessities, and if there is any money left, buy something that has value.

In April 2020, whopping 80% of people were in a strict savings mode, with only 12% of people thinking it would a good idea to spend money quickly. In January 2020 numbers were similar to November data: 71% of users wanting to save, while 19% of participants eager to spend.

It would take some time to get people’s confidence back after such a peculiar year as 2020, but people in Russia already are getting much more confident in their spending habits.
