Most Ukrainians plan to spend on gifts less than 1 thousand hryvnia (USD 36) this year or skip on buying presents altogether, a recent poll by Finance.ua demonstrated.
$36 or less on season gifts
A recent poll by an online financial news portal showed that the majority of people weren’t planning to splurge on gifts this year.
- 46% of participants plan to spend under 1,000 hryvnia ($36) on presents to family and friends.
- Further 11% of users have no plans to purchase any presents at all.
- 22% of respondents intend to spend 1-3 thousand hryvnia ($36-108).
- 13% of participants set their minds on 3-5 thousand hryvnia in spending ($108-180).
- Only 8% of respondents indicated plans to spend over 5,000 hryvnia ($180).
The average wage in Ukraine at the end of 2020 was USD 400 per month, this is why the figure of less than $36 on all the gifts to friends and family that could seem too small is actually relative to people’s income. It’s about 9% of the average monthly wage or 40% of the weekly salary.
Ukrainians traditionally give presents to each other on New Year’s Eve, as opposite to Christmas.
Many people in Ukraine support Orthodox Christianity with Christmas celebrated on 7 January. However, both 1 January and 25 December are public holidays in Ukraine and people are able to celebrate either date.
1,7 thousand people provided responses to the online poll in December 2020.
