There are some peculiarities to cultural customs of different countries and this is one aspect of dating in Russia that cannot be overlooked, whether you are a man or a woman.
Tip #9 for dating women from Russia: Bills
The default setting in the socially acceptable societal paradigm of relationships between men and women in Russia is for males to pay for dates.
Women don’t pay for dates and there are no splitting the bills, ever.
If you ask for this, it will be viewed as cheap, stingy, poverty-ridden, dishonourable, and scumbag. If you asked a woman out, you basically accept responsibility to cover the check.
We could finish on this note, because there are really no variations to this rule. Men pay for dates in Russia, as well as entertainment during a relationship and marriage.
Women cook, clean, take care of the household and childrearing, do washing and ironing, as well as take care of the husbands’ parents if required. The male is only supposed to go to work and bring the pay check home. He isn’t even obliged to earn enough for the family to live on and the woman is supposed to be working as well, if the guy doesn’t earn enough.
The wife is also supposed to sacrifice her own career perspectives for her husband’s: For instance, if he wants to study to possibly advance his career in the future, she would give up her studies and go to work to provide for the family.
So, men paying for dates during the short period of courtship (“the period of flowers and candies”, as it’s called in Russia) is a small sacrifice for being cared for the rest of his life. I personally think men in Russia are getting a fantastic deal.
Simply pay the bill
In Russia, after a short courtship when the pair is eating out often, couples settle in and spend time at home, where the woman cooks and the male eats. Oftentimes the guy is eating at his girlfriend’s place and never even offers to contribute to pay for groceries.
It could be very different in your future relationship when you two become an item, but if you want to have a chance this ever can happen, just cover the check.
Otherwise, don’t date women from Russia! They all expect it and they can hardly respect a guy who first asks her out and then wants her to pay a share for the meal. She could have eaten at home and it would cost her close to nothing. That’s the women’s view, anyway.
Alternatively, you may offer to cook a dinner for her! This could be a worthy compromise if paying the bills seems like too much trouble, and she will definitely enjoy a man cooking for her.
