The unexpected health crisis put a stop on many international couples’ plans to meet or reunite, but at the same time other lovers continued with weddings or even decided to get married. Love during pandemics still blossoms, apparently!

“Star Wars” wedding

One of the couples who decided not to wait did it because of their devotion to the favourite movie.

4th of May is the day of “Star Wars” and the newlyweds were dressed as the heroes from the movie.

The date had been chosen and reserved in February 2020 when they applied to get married.

Only the newlyweds were allowed to be present during the marriage ceremony in ZAGS, although there had been also a security guard and a cleaner, as well as an attendant at the wardrobe to take their coats, the reporter recalls.

The lovers had to use face masks and gloves and weren’t allowed to kiss, although the permission to give each other a hug post-ceremony was granted.

None of their parents who lived in other Russian cities were able to attend, friends had to stay at home as well.

The couple still plan to celebrate their marriage with family and friends later.

Travellers at bay

Another couple decided to get married when the pandemic was already in full swing.

They were travelling in Thailand separately and bumped into each other when getting out of the country became urgent at the end of February 2020. They both needed to get home to Russia.

But when the seasoned travellers returned home and had to settle in compulsory self-isolation, they realized that they were actually happy with just the two of them. And they decided: If we have found each other, why wait?

So, they booked the closest available date in ZAGS. It happened to be a 5-month anniversary of their relationship. In Russia couples have to wait at least 1 month until they are allowed to marry, from the date of application. They booked the ceremony online.

After getting married in the presence of each other and the registrar, the newlyweds were accepting online greetings from family and friends for the rest of the day. They, too, are planning a big party later in the year to celebrate their nuptials.

“I do” in May

Saying “I do” in May was important for our third couple, Danil and Dana, as they met in May 3 years ago. Two years ago they went for a trip together and a year ago he proposed, also in May.

This is why having a May wedding was important. The couple applied to get married at the end of March, when the pandemic was the top news but there were no orders about self-isolation.

When the regime of self-isolation was imposed, the lovers at first thought of moving the date of the wedding. The department of registrations of marriage even gave them a call asking if they are still going to proceed and offering a later date in June.

But the pair decided to keep the date in May.

• First of all, no one could say when things would be normal again.
• Second, they didn’t plan too many guests anyway. The plan was to get married in a very close group, and then celebrate in a larger circle of friends.
• Third, the couple thought that it would be even more romantic! They were just like heroes of a sci-fi movie, at the end of which love would certainly prevail.

The registration was under the accompaniment of a trendy pop-song from the recorder, with words saying, “His number goes to ban, he wasn’t sent me by God.” The couple decided it would be their song from that point on.

The whole happening was apocalyptic, yet unexpectedly romantic, the pair recalls.
