Population of Ukraine remains just under 42 million people, according to the official statistics report released by Ukrstat in November 2019.
The population of Ukraine (2019)
The residential population of the country as of 1 October 2019 was estimated by Ukrstat at 41,790,396 people — 200 thousand short of 42 million residents.
Total population is listed at 41,960,033 — 170 thousand more people than the residents.
- The largest region is Donetsk: 4,14 million people. However, a large part of it isn’t in control of the Ukrainian government. That’s the territory where self-proclaimed separatist governments rule, on the eastern border with Russia. Luhansk region with over 2,1 million inhabitants is also in the same situation.
- The population of Dnipropetrovsk region is estimated at 3,19 million.
- The city of Kyiv is viewed separately for the purposes of statistics and its population is estimated at 2,91 mln. Additional 1,76 million people live in Kyiv region and many of them work in the capital.
- Kharkiv’s region has 2,65 mln residents.
- Lviv’s region near the western border with Poland is populated by 2,5 mln of Ukrainians.
- The area of Odesa (Odessa) is home to 2.36 mln of Ukrainians.
The smallest regions are Chernivtsy, Chernihiv, and Kirovohrad, they have less than one million residents each.
How many men and women live in Ukraine?
According to the data released earlier in the year, the number of residents in Ukraine was on the level of 41,983,600 on the 1 January 2019. By 1 October, Ukrstat was estimating the number of inhabitants at 193 thousand people less.
- 53.7% of the residents were women.
- 46.3% were males.
By the same gender proportions, there are now around 22,441,000 females and 19,349,000 males.
In other words, there are about 3,092,000 more Ukrainian women than men. It means that nearly 14% of Ukrainian ladies cannot find a partner for life.
The imbalance between genders starts already for the people living in large cities in their twenties.
In addition to the substantial gender imbalance, there is another anomaly in demographics that the county is staring at: Deaths exceed live births by roughly a half. This is the major reason for the sharp decline in the estimated number of inhabitants in such a short period of time.
