With the pandemic putting the spotlight on importance of medical professions, it’s no surprise that a high share of school leavers in 2020 would like to join the ranks or doctors and nurses.
Russian high school graduates want to be nurses and doctors
A recent poll by WCIOM revealed preferences of high school graduates in 2020. Medical professions such as a doctor or a nurse scored the top position in the rank.
Medical sphere and health care greatly outperformed IT, programming or law as a choice of the future vocation.
When people were asked if they knew some high school graduates, including families of friends and their own, who are planning to start professional education for the future career, what they are going to study, this was the list of top jobs:
- Medical doctor, health care, nursing: 11%
- IT, programming: 6%
- Law: 6%
- Finance: 5%
- Teacher: 5%
- Engineer or technical specialist: 5%
- Building, construction: 3%
- Military: 3%
- Chef: 2%
- Design, architecture: 2%
- Auto mechanic: 2%
The poll participants were also asked what they would recommend as a future profession to a young person who was going to start professional education this year.
Health care professions came on top here as well, even more prominently:

17% of respondents chose option to avoid giving advice as they believe the young person needs to decide for himself or herself.
