Well, their wages are not even close to the amounts that medical doctors in western countries command.

How much does a medical doctor earn in Ukraine?

The low wages of people working in the health care industry of Ukraine came under fire, highlighted by the pandemics of 2020. The amount of time and effort health care workers had to put in seem grossly underrated when compared with their pay checks.

In 2020 Ukrainian hospitals got an opportunity to raise their medical doctors’ wages, dengi.ua reported. The money to be used for these purposes had been taken from the accounts of medical institutions and allocated by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

Andrey Vilenskiy, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Service, said, “Our main aim is to increase hospital staff salaries and to purchase medicines and medical equipment so that patients are not forced to pay their own money.”

In his interview he provided some data and statistics referring to average monthly wages in some Ukrainian hospitals.

The Regional Center of Emergency Medical Care & Disaster Medicine of Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council:

• medical personnel – 22,000 UAH (USD 793)
• department head – 28,000 UAH (USD 1,009)
• hospital director – 52,000 UAH (USD 1,874)

Kryvyi Rih Children’s Specialized Medical Rehabilitation Center:

• medical personnel – 7,000 UAH (USD 252)
• hospital director – 57,000 UAH (USD 2,054)

Kharkiv City Clinical Hospital of Emergency Medical Care:

• medical personnel – 16,000 UAH ($576)
• department head – 20,000 UAH ($721)
• hospital director – 30,000 UAH ($1,081)

The Minister of Health, Maxim Stepanov, underlined that Ukraine should constantly invest in the training of medical staff, infrastructure and equipment of medical institutions, as well as monitor the current state of scientific knowledge in the country.

The “should” part is, of course, the root of the problem. We all know what we should do but it doesn’t always happen this way. In Ukraine, medical doctors earn peanuts compared not only to other countries in Europe but also to other industries locally. Even shop assistants earn more than a trained medical nurse.
