Wages in Ukraine: How much do Ukrainian women and men earn in 2021?
According to the State Statistics Service, the average salary in Ukraine is on the rise, Finance.ua reported. The highest wages are in Kiev.
The average monthly pension by age in Ukraine is less than 5,000 hryvnia (USD 180).
In February, the average monthly wage Ukraine-wide was 12,459 hryvnia (USD 450), It is 2,1 times higher than the minimum salary, which is currently USD 6,000 (USD 215) per month. Bear in mind, some people do get such wages!
Compared to February 2020, the average salary in the same month of 2021 went up 15,7% in absolute numbers. In terms of “real purchasing power” the government’s statistics state 7.6% increase.
February’s wages for 2021 are also 0,7% up as compared to the previous month of January, although there are many public holidays in January, which obviously brings down the numbers.
The largest remuneration growth was recorded:
- Rovensky region (22,3%)
- Chernovitsky (21,1%)
- Khmelnitsky (21,1%)
Wages in Kiev (Kyiv) are the highest in the country and the average salary sits at 18,504 hryvnia ($665) per month.
The lowest monthly pay checks are in Kirovogradsky region: 9903 hryvnia ($355).
According to the government’s statistics portal Ukrstat, there are 7.6 million of Ukrainian women and 8.3 million of men who had been employed in 2020. The population of Ukraine is estimated at 42 millions. In other words, 16 million employees are feeding the population 3 times the size of the workforce.
Salaries by industry
- The highest wages are in IT and telecommunications, where employees bring home around UAH 23 thousand ($820).
- Pay checks of workers in insurance and finance achieve UAH 22,319 ($800).
- Hospitality workers are getting the lowest salaries: less than USH 8,000 monthly (under $300).
How do Ukrainians assess their financial situation?
During the last 12 months, which saw quarantine restrictions in Ukraine due to pandemics, Ukrainian families had to significantly reduce their spending.
They stopped travelling as much, which is understandable, the whole world did. Expenses on clothes and entertainment went down, which isn’t surprising either. What is surprising, however, that expenses on food also dropped.
Only 7% of Ukrainians said that their financial situation is stable and satisfactory.
Pensions in Ukraine
The average pensioner in the country is getting less than 5,000 hryvnia (USD 180) as their aged pension payout. For comparison, the minimum remuneration is UAH 6,000 (USD 215).
To get a pension of 10,000 hryvnia (USD 360) per month, which is considered “big” in Ukraine, is possible if the employee was earning a salary of UAH 20,000 ($718). Such “high” salaries are extremely rare, and this is why only 3% of Ukrainians get such pensions.
