Russian Public Opinion Research Centre WCIOM revealed results of a recent poll about citizens’ plans for summer vacations in 2018. #1 option on the list among local residents is to simply stay at home.
Summer vacations: What Russians plan
Every year WCIOM asks locals about their plans for summer vacations.
- Spending the vacation at home is the most popular option in 2018. 45% of respondents in Russia said they didn’t plan going anywhere and would relax at home.
- Dacha (a countryside house where Russians usually grow vegetables and fresh produce) leads the rating as the preferred way of spending summer vacations away from one’s apartment. 34% of respondents indicated this is where they could be found during the summer break.
- 14% of respondents stated they were planning visits to other cities, while 12% indicated they intended to visit Sochi and Krasnodar region, the Russian South.
- 1 in 10 respondents (9%) is planning a seaside holiday in Crimea, a former Ukrainian territory on the Black Sea that was taken over by Russia in 2014.
- 3% will visit other countries of the former Soviet Union and 1% plan to travel to Baltic region (Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia, 3 countries of the former USSR that now are members of the European Union).
- Only 4% of Russians plan to spend vacations in foreign countries that are not republics of the former USSR, which is what called “far abroad” (while countries of the former Soviet Union are named “close abroad”). In 2017, 6% of Russians said they would spend their vacations in “far abroad” locations.
- The average amount residents of Russia plan to spend is 44,205 rubles (USD 707). It’s 11% higher than last year. Residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg budget 54,865 rubles ($877) for this purpose.
Small town dwellers are more likely to plan a home stay (55%). Older respondents indicated a higher preference to spend the summer break at dacha (42%).
44% of respondents indicated that they are unable to afford a vacation away from hometown due to financial reasons (35% in 2016).
Usually locals are planning to pay for a trip away from the money they saved with this purpose in mind (45%). However, 4% of respondents said they were going to pay by credit cards and 2% pant to borrow money from friends.
Apparently, 5% of locals simply prefer to stay at home for their time off, rather than go away. 8% of respondents indicated they would be unable to get away due to ill health, their own or because of looking after a family member. 17% of people who responded to the poll will have to work all summer. Small kids keep at home 18% of locals in addition to finances (44%), statistics show.
63% of people who answered the survey questions believe this year’s holidays will be as enjoyable as during previous years, while 24% hope it will be better. 9% are pessimistic and think it will be worse.
