Average monthly wage in Ukraine exceeded 10,000 hryvnia (USD 374) in March 2019, the official government statistics service Ukrstat reported.
10,000-hryvnia wages are no longer a dream for Ukrainians
The average monthly salary in Ukraine in March 2019 exceeded UAH 10,000.
Ukrstat reported that average earnings of workers in Ukrainian companies with 10 or more employees in March 2019 was on the level of 10,237 hryvnia ($383).
It’s a huge jump on the previous month: February’s pay checks averaged only 9,429 hryvnia.
The average Ukrainian salary had already achieved over 10,000 hryvnia in December 2018 (UAH 10,573), however, that’s traditionally the month of yearly bonuses, and in January wages dropped to 9,223.
- The highest remuneration by region is in the city of Kyiv: UAH 16,207 ($607).
- In the majority of regions workers earned from 7 to 9 thousand hryvnia.
- Chernivtsi had the lowest earnings: UAF 7,437 per month ($278) as a region.
- The highest wages by industry remained in the air transport: UAH 25,757 ($965).
- The lowest salaries are earned by postal workers and couriers: only UAH 6,106 ($228).
No wonder so many locals leave the country for better remuneration in Europe. Some sources estimate that one Ukrainian leaves the country every 30 seconds to find a job abroad.
Real earnings vs. advertised
The amounts may seem small to you, but remember that just a few years ago the average monthly pay check in Ukraine was under USD 200. Since then the minimum salary in Ukraine been raised every year to make up for losses due to inflation.
From 1 January 2019 the lowest monthly salary in the country cannot be less than USH 4,173 ($156). A lot of people are still earning only this minimum, especially employees in small businesses such as cafes or shops. Such companies are not included in the advertised salaries in official statistical reports, because they employ less than 10 people.
Currently 1 US Dollar is worth less than 27 hrvynia.

good work, but we have to move further so that Ukrainians have no reason to leave Ukraine to earn a living abroad
I agree Nazer. But the problem is much bigger. In life people want to move up and create a better life and opportunities for their children. Right? How is it even possible to buy a bigger apartment or a house making $2.15 an hour US? You can’t. I wonder if 401K plans are popular in Russia and Ukraine. I think probably not because you need all your salary to survive and to keep your dignity. I may have even read this statistic on elenasmodels, I believe 1 person leaves the Ukraine every 2 minutes to work in countries with better… Read more »
I know that using roses is not the best commodity to use in comparison to inflation but in November I paid 15 hryvnia per rose and 3 months later they cost 25 Hryvnia per rose. Thanks almost double.
Still do the math. Even at 10,000 hryvnia a month is about $2.15 an hour US and let’s not even talk about pensions. Many of the people I have spoken with in Ukraine can not afford to live by themselves and have had to accept a roommate.
