Being aware about your awareness is a great way to decrease stress and amplify positive emotions, scientists point out. Meditation is one of the ways to increase self-awareness and promote well-being, Science Daily reports.
Simple ways to decrease stress
“Healthy mind in a healthy body” or “Healthy body is the product of a healthy mind”? The Centre for Healthy Minds pointed out 4 pillars of mental well-being that have been proven to be effective. Moreover, it’s possible to improve one’s skills with training.
- Awareness: Attention to one’s environment and internal feelings and thoughts.
- Connection: Being kind and compassionate to others.
- Insight: Curiosity and self-knowledge.
- Purpose: Understanding own values and motivation.
Having a purpose in life is proven to promote longevity and mental health. A personally meaningful goal helps people to improve their health outcomes.
Mind is highly trainable, according to the Centre’s researcher Cortland Dahl. A person’s personality or character can change and it is possible to evoke modifications that are desirable. “We can learn to be in the driver’s seat of our own mind,” Dahl pointed out.
Mind, as the body, can change and adapt, so that people flourish.
Just as there is evidence of how the physical body works and changes, there is now a growing body of research on how the mind operates.
“We are not born a certain fixed way. Our brains and nervous system and biology can be shaped,” Dahl stated. In this way, meditation works similar on the mind to how sport affects the body. Different types of meditation cause different changes in the brain, just like various types of sport develop certain muscles.
