In today’s interconnected world, many men date someone from another culture, whether it’s over a long distance online or in their own countries. If you want this relationship to last, stir clear off these major mistakes that most men make when dating Ukrainian women.
Top-5 mistakes that most men make when dating Ukrainian women
Obviously, love and relationships don’t have a rule book, so people make decisions based on their view of the situation and past experiences. However, when you are dating someone from another culture, this can backfire, if relationship customs in another country are different.
These mistakes are typical of guys trying to establish a relationship with a woman from Ukraine.
Mistake #1. Confusing Ukraine with Russia
Some people think that Ukraine is a part of Russia, or it is the same country, or may call a Ukrainian woman “Russian”. A lady from Ukraine may actually be Russian, but she is more likely to be Ukrainian.
Because these two countries are in an ongoing conflict since 2014, the international relations are rather unfriendly. This is why a woman who identifies strongly as Ukrainian may be offended or annoyed if you confuse these two countries and nations.
If you are unaware, both Russia and Ukraine used to be part of the Soviet Union. However, Russia was the dominant nation in that union of 15 republics; thus, all kids at schools had to learn Russian and it was the state language. This is probably why many westerners call people born in the USSR “Russian”, although they may belong in actuality to one of 80+ nations living on the territory of the former Soviet Union.
In any case, if you are dating a woman from Ukraine, research the country’s history and get some update on what is currently going on there politically. Once you have some knowledge, you can ask your lady about the situation in her country, she will give you her perspective, so you know where you stand.
Mistake #2. Offering to split the bill
If you are the one who invited her out, it is expected that you pay the bill. In addition, in Ukraine men still pay the bill when a couple is out, regardless.
If you offer to spill the bill, the lady will be definitely put off and she may even decide that you are cheap.
If you know the lady is from Ukraine, simply pick the check without discussion or offering to split. She is not going to be offended that you offered to pay, trust me. And in the unlikely event that it happens, tell her you’ve read on the Internet that in Ukraine men always pay, and decided to go with the cultural customs of her country. In any case, you’ll win.
Mistake #3. Not bringing flowers to your date
The custom of bringing a bunch of pretty blossoms to a date bewilders foreigners. But it used to be a norm in the West as well, as recently as 1950s. In Russia at the time, flowers were a luxury that Soviet people couldn’t afford.
Fast forward 70 years, and flowers are no longer a part of dating culture in the West, but in Ukraine it’s a compulsory requirement, if you want to be seen as a gentleman who respects a lady.
Again, you may feel weird by bringing flowers to a date. You may also wonder what is she going to do with the bouquet, if you are going to movies or restaurant. This really shouldn’t worry you: Once the flowers are in her hands, it’s her concern what she is going to do. If she is Ukrainian, she would be able to figure it out (most often there is some kind of a bottle or tall glass that may fit the bouquet, and the service personnel are happy to help).
Mistake #4. Thinking that you are talking to a woman, when in reality it’s a swindle
There is an infamous online swindle where men think they are building a relationship online, and it’s not the girl in the photos that is talking to them.
How to figure it out?
If you pay for each message that you send or receive from a woman on a website, via a system of pre-paid credits, there is an ample room for swindlers. The payment for messages may seem like nothing to you, but you probably are raking hundreds of dollars in monthly bills. It seems pretty real, you may even get a couple of video chats with the girl, and you may think it’s all legit.
In reality, pretty girls just pose for photos and do a few videos every week to maintain the urgency and make it look realistic, but most communication is done by outsourced writers, trained in psychology of lonely males. The girl in photos is also getting paid percentage of the earnings, for doing basically nothing.
Outsourced writers are good at hinting about “needs”, so you start feeling like helping out this gorgeous girl with learning English, sorting out her affairs at home, so she can travel to you, or simply buying overpriced teddy bears promoted by the website as a present to your beloved (the amount paid for a present is usually split between the site, the organizer of the scheme and the girl herself).
You still may think it’s not much money, but if a girl has 30-50 admirers, then all the participants are making a comfortable living, by doing a pretty easy job.
To make it clear: The girl in photos exists. But she probably doesn’t even know who you are. She is likely to be a willing participant in the scheme and benefits from all the cash her admirers spend on the site.
There are many similar sites to this scheme, where men willingly support pretty young women, knowing it won’t lead to a relationship. The sites I am talking about are different: They try to make you believe you are actually talking to the pretty girl and she is sincere about liking you and wanting a future with you.
How do you avoid this swindle?
- Never pay for each message. It is this payment that allows to employ outsourced writers posing as the girl in photos. Without payment for each message, this scheme cannot work.
- Get on a free messenger like WhatsApp or Telegram, and chat to the woman there. It’s free and you can connect at any time. All Ukrainian women know how to use Google translate. (By the way, many outsourced writers also use Google Translate, they don’t even speak English. The outsourced writers include pensioners, students, and so on – categories of people who struggle to work regular hours or wish to work from the comfort of their homes.)
- Make sure you chat on video a couple of times every week for at least 10-15 minutes. This makes it much more real and you know you are indeed chatting with this gorgeous lady, and she really likes you.
Mistake #5. Not talking about a personal meeting
If you are in an online relationship with a Ukrainian woman and you hope to move it to the real life, mention the matter of personal meeting early.
See what are her thoughts about it, how she would like to meet:
- Would she consider flying to you? Is she able to do it? (Ukrainians need a visa to the USA, Canada, Australia, although they can visit Europe visa-free.)
- Does she prefer to meet somewhere in a third country that both of you can easily access?
- Or does she hope you can fly to her country?
In any case, such a discussion will make her feel that you have a realistic view on your relationship and it could become something special. This will positively separate you from all the other guys!
