From 2013 to 2020 over 445 thousand Ukrainians used their right to claim free farm land. It’s 1 in 100 people.
Free farm land in Ukraine
We had reported on the legislation allowing Ukrainians to claim a piece of farm land for free previously. In fact, Ukrainians are able to get 5 pieces of land for free.
By 2020, 445,486 Ukrainians got free land under this legislation, Finance.ua reported. Over 700 thousand hectares of land had been distributed in this way. Over 332 thousand people got the land during the last two years, as the idea became popular and well known.
Bear in mind that during the times of the Soviet Union land belonged to the state and private ownership wasn’t allowed. A large part of farm land belonged to collective farms.
Every citizen has the right to claim 5 pieces of land for free.
Russia also offers citizens free land, but in remote regions of Far East. Every citizens is eligible to get 1 ha of land for free in Russia, including kids. There are conditions attached to this offer: The land should be used to operate a business.
Ukraine has recently approved a law on sale of farm land. For years, the farm land couldn’t be sold. The Ukrainian farmland market opens in 2021. However, it will be only open for locals. Foreigners won’t be able to purchase.
