Reviewing results of 2018, Ukrainian portal Segodnya (“Today”) checked the country’s position in the international ratings.
How’s Ukraine rated?
In some regards, the country was doing better in 2018 than before, while in other areas it experienced a drop.
1. World Bank’s ‘Doing Business’ Rating
One of the most prestigious lists analyses the situation in 190 countries. Ukraine climbed up by 5 steps and is now #71 in the world. The government views the advancement as positive, which confirms that Ukraine’s economical situation is improving.
In 2012 Ukraine was #152, so it’s indeed a significant progress.
#72 on the list, after Ukraine, belongs to Greece.
However, to become attractive for foreign investors, the country should be in the top-30, economists warn. The results, albeit impressive, are far from what the government promised when coming to power.
2. Global Competiveness Index by the World Economic Forum
According to this list, Ukraine is at the position 83 out of 140. The index considers 12 parameters.
Ukraine improved its positions in financial systems, innovations, infrastructure, institutional development, the market of goods, the level of business development, and the labour market.
Ukraine’s neighbours in the rating are Macedonia and Dominical Republic.
3. Economic Freedom
In this rating Ukraine isn’t faring very well: #134 out of 162. Benin has exactly the same rating at #134, while Mauritania is one level down as #136.
But it’s still a progress: Last year Ukraine was at #149.
However, the experts see the progress as too slow.
4. The Legatum Institute’s Prosperity Index
Ukraine made a move up but only by 1 position: from 112 to 111 (out of 149 countries on the list).
The index collects data via interviews with people asking about the state of economics, social sphere, the government, entrepreneurship, health system and personal freedom.
Ukraine’s largest problems are the state of the health system (#138 out of 149, a pretty poor performance), the effectiveness of the government and the rule of the law (#129).
Ukraine’s neighbours in the rating are Malawi and Djibouti, both in Africa.
5. UN Human Development Index
Here Ukraine is #88 out of 189 countries — a loss of 4 positions since the last review.
Equador and Peru are Ukraine’s neighbours in the rating.
6. Global Innovation Index
Here Ukraine went up 7 steps and is now at #43 out of 126 countries. The rating considers 80 various criteria, including the number of patent applications, scientific publications, etc.
Greece and Thailand are Ukraine’s neighbours in this index.
7. Global Wealth Report by Credit Suisse Bank
No good news for Ukraine here: #123 out of 140 countries, sharing this modest listing with Belarus.
Personal wealth of a Ukrainian is only USD 1563.
The wealthiest are the Swiss with $530,000 per person.
8. Open Data Barometer by World Wide Web Foundation
Ukraine is #17 out of 30 countries who joined the International Open Data Charter. It’s 7 levels higher than the year before.
9. Global Peace Index
Ukraine raised two levels, although it’s still much closer to the bottom than to the top: #152 out of 163 countries.
In 2012, before the conflict at the East of the country started, Ukraine was at #71.
10. The World Happiness Report
Ukrainians dropped in the rating of happiness, having lost 6 positions. The major unhappiness is caused by the level of social security and GDP per capita. Ukrainians are at #138 out of 156 countries, next to Sudan and Togo.
11. Global Passport Power Ranking
Here Ukraine is doing pretty well: #28 put of 193 countries. Ukrainians can travel to 131 countries without applying for a visa.
Citizens of United Arab Emirates have the strongest passports, which allow them to visit 167 countries without a visa application.
In general, Ukraine is improving its positions in ratings. Maybe it’s not going as fast as the Ukrainian government and citizens would like to happen, but global indexes show an upward trend.
