Looking at 2018 Ukraine’s official migration statistics, it appears that there are more people moving in than leaving the country.
Ukraine migration statistics
Ukrstat data, released on 23 November 2018, show the number of people who moved out and arrived to various cities in the period from January to September of this year.
The officials statistics registered over 450 thousand arrivals and nearly 440,000 departures. The net migration is over 10 thousand people who stayed in Ukraine.
- Kyiv region registered the largest number of arrivals (41,332) along with 21,844 departures. The net migration is positive, with nearly 19.5 thousand people who stayed in the region, from them 7,291 in the city of Kyiv (Kiev).
- Luhansk and Donetsk, the two areas that are out of control of the Ukrainian government at the moment and under the power of separatists, are the biggest losers, with 4,179 and 7,245 people moving out of the region.
- Dnipro gained 2,084 residents and Kharkiv welcomed 3,165 people.
- Odesa (Odessa), the popular holiday resort on the Black Sea, attracted 4,504 newcomers.
- Regional cities of Zaporizhia, Kirovohrad, Mykolayiv, Rivne, Sumy, Kherson, and Cherkasy lost over a thousand residents each.
We reported previously that two people migrate every minute out of Ukraine to work abroad. If the latest data is correct, this trend may be slowing down, with more people coming back home than moving to other states.
