Tea-lovers are quicker-witted, a recent research concluded.
Men who are dating Russian women often compliment their intelligence. A recent research might have just shed light why this is happening: Apparently, lovers of tea have an edge in the department of brain organization over the people who don’t drink tea. Russians, especially women, love tea! Is this one of the things that help Russian females to be more intelligent?
Great news for the lovers of tea
Scientists from the NUS (University of Singapore) set to find out if there are any difference between mental abilities of tea lovers and individuals who do not like drinking it on regular basis.
The results of their resent research showed that tea-drinkers’ brains have the edge over the ones who don’t like the beverage.
NUS researchers worked in collaboration with scientists from Essex and Cambridge Universities, and presented results of their joint work in the scientific journal Aging.
The study conclusion was drawn upon the thorough assessment of neuro-imaging information of 36 people.
According to the head of the research Assistant Professor Feng Lei, “Our study results provide the first confirmation of positive effect of tea drinking to cognitive abilities of people. It suggests that systematic drinking of tea protects a person against age-associated downturn of mental abilities”, continues Feng Lei, who works for the Department of Psychological Medicine of the NUS School of Medicine.
Advantages of everyday drinking of tea
The earlier investigations had found that consistent tea drinking improves an overall health; in particular, it improves a person’s mood and prevents cardiovascular problems. It is worth mentioning that Dr. Feng has been dealing with this specific issue for a long stretch of time, and his results released in 2017 registered that those who drink tea every day reduce their prospects of mental downswing by 50%.
In light of these exploratory findings Dr. Feng and his fellows decided to continue investigation of the relationship between our mental health and consumption of tea.
The new study conducted in 2015-2018 period was based on observations of 36 people aged 60 plus. Researchers assessed the lifestyle, health and mental wellness of aged volunteers. The study participators have also been asked to go through MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and neuropsychological check-ups.
Then scientists compared the imaging and psychological results of non-tea drinkers with those who cannot imagine their lives without tea. It appeared that persons who have been drinking either black, or green, or oolong tea at a minimum of 4 times a week over the past 25 years have more efficient brain functioning.
On the other hand, another study demonstrated that people who drink more than 2 soft drinks daily have a higher chance of early death. Better drink tea than Coke or Fanta!
Superior “traffic network”
“As an illustration, we can make a comparison of mental activity to road traffic. Imagine that brain areas are destinations that connected to each other by “roads”. When the organization of road network is good enough, the traffic becomes more efficient and vehicles rich their destinations faster. Processing of information in our minds works the same way: better connections between brain areas make people more quick-witted”, clears up Dr. Feng.
He stated, “Previously we found that mental abilities of tea lovers are better. Our present conclusions non-directly support our earlier discovery. They show that continuous tea drinking improves a person’s cognitive organization by enhancing connections between brain regions”.
As brain configuration and mental performance are ingeniously connected, there is a need for further research to discover the way our brains work generating various cognitive abilities such as memory or concentration. In their next stage of investigation the team of Dr. Feng will be looking at how bioactive components of tea influence our mental development as well as searching for feasible methods to maintain good cognition over the course of ageing.
