News from TV, friends from Facebook
Ukrainians still use prohibited social networks Odnoklassniki and VKontakte, but their popularity keeps dropping.
Instagram and Telegram, on the other hand, keep growing in popularity. The controversial newcomer TikTok also has its admirers. TikTok is actually more popular than Twitter. The least popular service is LinkedIn.
Facebook remains the most popular social network in Ukraine.
Here is the results of a recent survey on what share of respondents uses certain services:
- Facebook: 59.7%
- YouTube: 39.9%
- Instagram: 27.2%
- Telegam: 17.6%
- VKontakte: 7.2%
- Odnoklassniki: 7%
- TikTok: 4.6%
- Twitter: 4.3%
- Pintest: 1.3%
- LinkedIn: 1%
Among all respondents nearly 27% don’t use any social networks.
Regarding messengers, Viber was the most popular: Over 66% of Ukrainians use it.
Facebook messenger is utilized by 29% of participants and Telegram by 25% of respondents.
TV remains the most popular way of learning about news and current affairs: Over 65% of people named it as the source. Internet is the second on the list in regard to news (52.7%). Newsworthy items from social networks are known to 45% of participants, while 1 in 3 Ukrainians learn about news from… neighbours and friends!
Half of the respondents are daily on their smart phones, tablets, and other gadgets. This means that the other half isn’t doing it every day! In Ukraine, apparently, a lot of people aren’t that addicted to Internet as in many western countries.
The survey was conducted by Razumkov Centre among 4,000 locals in July 2020.
