Ukrainians are spending less on cigarettes and alcohol, according to the official statistics on expenditure. In the first quarter of 2019 locals purchased 5.9 billion hryniva less worth of spirits and tobacco products.
Ukrainians in savings mode
In the first quarter of 2019 Ukrainians spent 655 billion hryvnia, which is about USD 25 billion, Finance.ua reported.
It’s 40 billion less than in the previous quarter, but such a seasonal cut is rather normal: We all tend to overspend during the merry season of Christmas and New Year.
Top things that Ukrainians are saving on (in billions of hryvnia)
- Transport: -18.9 billion hryvnia
- Food: -10.3
- Alcohol and tobacco: -5.9
- Appliances, furniture, TV’s: -5
- Entertainment, recreation: -3.9
- Clothing, footwear: -3.2
- Restaurants, hotels: -1.8
Paying more for electricity and medical
At the same time certain living expenses took a hike. For instance, so called “communal” expenses (water, electricity, repairs fund) have grown by 17.6 billion as compared to the previous quarter and reached 106 billion in total.
Health expenses have also increased by 1.1 billion, reaching the level of 38.2 billion.
