Job interview is the time when all details matter. Words, facial expressions and even the clothes the applicants wears. But apparently, the jewellery one wears can also hinder or help to get a job. A new poll showed that almost one third of Ukrainian women do not wear their wedding rings to job interviews and believe that taking the ring off can actually help them to get a job.
Why women take off rings to get a job
An unusual study by Credit Angel provided a surprising insight. Apparently, 1 in 3 Ukrainian women takes off her wedding ring before a job interview, Segodnya.ua reported.
Employers do not have the right to ask applicants questions about their family situation. Nonetheless, many women are afraid that their marital status may prevent them from obtaining a desired position.
According to the study, 29% of married women fear that they will not receive or will even lose their jobs if the employer finds out details of their personal life. They are worried that a ring on their finger can lead to discrimination. The employer can decide against hiring a marriage lady because she might take a maternity leave in the near future, Harper’s Bazaar reported.
Unfortunately, this does not come as a surprise. In 2016, recruiter Bruce Hurwitz published an article on LinkedIn, in which he advised women to take off engagement rings for the interview. He described how a woman could not get several jobs because of the ring she had on. As soon as she took it off, she got the job right away.
In addition, according to the study, 59% of hirers believe that women should inform future employers of their pregnancy. At the same time, 46% of employers consider it acceptable to ask a woman if she already has children.
