Reporters in Ukraine looked into the issue of spending during quarantine: Do people fork out more money or less?
Do Ukrainians spend more money or less during quarantine?
It depends on the lifestyle, Ukrainian reporters from KP.ua pointed out.
- People who were well off are spending less. They no longer go on holidays abroad, don’t eat out, don’t go to movies. They also do not buy any fashion items, since there is nowhere to wear it to. Massages, manicures, and hairstyling is of no need either. Thus, wealthy people need substantially less money.
- People who were poor are spending more. Poor Ukrainians didn’t have much cash on discretionary buying; all they’ve earned was spent on food, accommodation, and transport. Now they don’t need to pay for transport, but they are eating more because of staying at home. They use more power, water, and gas, so their utility bills are likely to go up.
Will Ukraine be able to win the fight against the virus?
According to a local poll, the opinions split: 46% of respondents believe that Ukraine will be able to cope with the virus, while 44% of survey participants think the opposite. However, most respondents wish for quarantine to end in the near future, as people don’t have much money in savings to last.
- 4 out of 10 users stated they don’t have any savings.
- 13% of respondents would be able to last 2 weeks.
- 18% of participants would be able to last a month.
How much money do Ukrainians spend on food daily?
The same survey found out how much people in Ukraine require to buy food.
- 15% of users manage on 100 hryvnia (USD 3.70) per day.
- 28% of participants spend 100-250 hryvnia (USD 3.7-9).
- 23% of survey takers require over 500 hryvnia (USD 18) daily.
The rest of the participants found it difficult to provide an amount they spend on food.
The poll also discovered that most people didn’t buy any extra food during the time of mass purchases in stores before the quarantine: 2 out of 3 Ukrainians responded they didn’t make provisions.
Among those who purchased extra food, 6% bought more vegetables and fruit, 7% of people stocked on meat, while 26% purchased cookies, rice, and pasta.

Interesting article, illustrative of the tragedy: Many of the well-off can work and shelter from home, continue to earn, and save in spending. Meanwhile, many of the 40 percent without any savings either can’t work, and risk eviction and starvation, or can work and risk catching the virus. Inequality really does kill.
