Ukrainian prime minister Denys Shmyhal announced the country’s plans to join NATO and the European Union and when it can happen.
When will Ukraine join NATO and the EU?
According to Shmyhal, Ukraine strives to make it happen within the next 5-10 years. Obviously, this is only possible if other 27 countries of the European Union approve it, KP.ua reported.
“Ukraine is ready to become a member of the EU, we strive for it as soon as possible,” the prime minister stated.
Shmyhal believes there are two main reasons why this hasn’t happened yet. First, Ukraine needs to meet the standards of the European Union, primarily in anti-corruption department and developing the independent court system. Shmyhal believes that digitalization will assist in bringing the country up to date in this department.
The second reason, apparently, is linked to the fact that not all current members of the European Union feel positive about accepting new member states.
At the moment Ukrainian government is discussing an agreement on sharing the airspace and common standards for the energy sector.
