According to Eurostat, the highest number of robberies happens in Belgium, France, and Spain. Ukraine is much safer than these countries, local police officials reported.
Ukraine is becoming safer every year
In 2017 there were 42 robberies per 100 thousand people, in 2018 the number dropped to 32, Sergey Knyazev, an advisor in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, pointed out in a recent post. In 2019 this number dropped even further, there are only 23 such cases per 100,000 population.
Compare it with the European statistics, which show that this indicator is much higher.
- Belgium: 167
- France: 150
- Spain: 144
- Great Britain: 132
The lowest number of robberies is in Hungary and Slovakia (9). Slovenia is also very safe (12). Estonia and Czech Republic have 15 such crimes per 100 thousand population.
Thus, the Ukrainian level of safety is close to countries like Latvia (31), Denmark (36), and Lithuania (38).
Germany and Netherlands have 47 cases of such crimes per 100,000 population.
However, not everyone in Ukraine is convinced that the local statistics reflects the realities correctly. Some commentators believe that not all such crimes may be recorded correctly by the police, in an attempt to show an improvement in numbers and avoid doing extra work.
“Robbing paupers isn’t profitable,” Ekaterina Padalka commented, pointing out to the fact that Ukrainians don’t have much valuables on them to be targets of street attacks.
