Ukrainian hryvnia isn’t the most stable of currencies, this is why travel agents routinely list prices of tours and tickets in USD. However, according to new laws it’s not allowed and operators must list prices in hryvnia or face fines.
The cost of travel in Ukraine should be in the local currency
One of the reasons why such a requirements was imposed on travel agents by operators is due to the fact that many agents like to use their own exchange rate benefiting them greatly.
It could make comparing prices from different agents problematic, Finance.ua reported.
Listing prices in the local currency, Ukrainian hryvnia, should make it more transparent and easier to understand, the head of the government’s regulating committee Aleksey Khmelnitsky pointed out.
The companies that don’t bring their advertising materials in line with the regulator’s requirement will face fines.
Listing prices in USD is typical in Ukraine, when it’s about big ticket items such as apartments or travel packages. Especially for tour operators, they have to pay their partners in USD, so it’s easier to list prices in dollars and then do conversions on the spot as per today’s exchange rate.
But now they would have to constantly adjust prices as the local currency fluctuates, or set the numbers higher from the start.
