Center for Informational Communications “Rating” together with the magazine “Otdykh v Rossii” (Vacationing in Russia) revealed the list of top 10 regions for local tourism.

The ranking includes 85 destinations.
Moscow is ranked the country’s most attractive place for visiting, as expected. Saint Petersburg holds the second position.
Here are the 5 most attractive areas in Russia:
- Moscow
- Saint Petersburg
- Krasnodar Krai
- Crimea
- Moscow region
The top 10 also includes Nizhny Novgorod, the Altai Territory, Tatarstan, Kaliningrad region and Primorsky Krai (south of the Far East), Lenta.ru reports.
The researchers took into account such criteria as available accommodation, the importance of tourism in the economy of the territory, revenue level, attractiveness of the destination among foreigners and locals, environmental situation, crime levels, etc.
Least attractive places are Chukotka (85) and the Jewish Autonomous Region (84).
Not too many people want to spend their vacation in the Northern Caucasus (except the city of Stavropol), areas of the Far East, Siberia, and the Urals.
These areas are not strong economically and show lower revenues from the travel industry. Weather conditions are also of great importance. For example, winter in Chukotka lasts up to ten months a year! No wonder the region seems unattractive to travelers.
Moscow region is famous for magnificent churches.

For me it is quite surprising to know that Moscow is tourist attraction number one (“as expected”, huh!). It is business attraction for sure but I always thought Saint-Petersburg is the best place to visit in Russia in terms of sightseeing.
It is enough interesting statistics. The local russian tourism is not a great success, but among foreigners it is really popular, especially in Moscow. It is quite logical, because the capital always was the most popular destination for tourists regardless the country. And I partly agree, but I would rather add Crimea to the third position in the list of the most attractive areas in Russia. I visited Saint Petersburg last summer. This is a wonderful and beautiful city. But there is one disadvantage for tourists. The problem is suddenly changes of the weather. I had to carry an umbrella, warm jacket and be ready for the cold weather and moist air. And so it happened, while I was visiting the Peter and Paul’s Fortress. I had to walk in wet trainers and warm jacket in summer. But Saint Petersburg is the best place for visiting in Russia.
I think there is too much Moscow in one list. I like to travel across Russian cities, for example, I like small and cozy Vologda, where you can enjoy the spirit of antiquity. I love romantic St. Petersburg, where you can walk endlessly, it is the city of my first love. And now I’d like to visit warm and sunny Krasnodar Krai.
In my opinion, I believe that thebest city for tourists is St. Petersburg. With its majestic buildings, this city will show you the entire history of Russia. I believe that St. Petersburg is the second capital of Russia. But most likely here are expensive home prices. If a person wants to find apartments cheaper, and wages correspond to Moscow salaries, then you need to live in the north of the country.
