Although the majority of Russians don’t want kids to study abroad, over half of young Russians aged 18-24 would like their offspring to get a degree in a foreign land.
If they were to choose a country where to send kids to study, which one would they pick? Here is the list of top-10 destinations to get a foreign degree among Russians, according to a recent poll by WCIOM.ru.
England, Germany, and USA attract Russians the most
- English universities are seen as the most attractive place to get a degree by Russian respondents: 38% wish to send their kids to study in UK.
- Germany scored 19% of votes, possibly because foreigners don’t have to pay to get a university degree.
- The USA is in the third place with 16% of votes.
China was the fourth but only scored 4% of votes. It is actually a popular destination among Russians for studies.
Europe, Czech Republic, Switzerland, France, Canada, and Israel are also in the top-10 destinations for foreign studies among Russians, with scores of 1-2%.
Why do Russians want (and don’t want) for kids to study abroad?
The leading reason among those who wish to send kids to study abroad is the quality of education (47%). It is seen as more modern, comprehensive, and prestigious.
Other factors include the ability to find a better job (15%), the ability to live during the period of studies in a more developed, stable country (13%) and to get an qualification that is recognized internationally (12%).
The chance to stay in the country is #4 on the list with 7% of votes. The same share of respondents would like kids to be able to improve the knowledge of a foreign language.
Among the respondents who don’t wish for their kids to study in a foreign land, the leading reasons for that are the belief that education at home isn’t any worse (39%) and the parents’ wish for kids to live and study in Russia (39%).
13% of respondents who wish for kids to rather get a local degree believe it’s cheaper to study in Russia, while 9% of parents think it’s too scary and kids are better off staying closer to them. 7% of respondents pointed out that Russia and other countries have too dissimilar systems of values, while 3% are scared that kids would like to stay abroad.
