You may have heard jokes about having a spring in one’s step following a satisfying intimate encounter, but this fact now has a scientific explanation. People indeed have an advantage in the level of engagement at work for at least 24 hours after they had sex, which is easily explainable by the chemistry of our bodies.
How sex helps job satisfaction
Naturally, people engage in lovemaking at home with the intimate partner, and not at work. However, a satisfying romantic life is good for job performance, apparently.
The effect lasts at least 24 hours. Workers in the study reported experiencing more job satisfaction and were faster to engage in the tasks of the day.
At the same time, bringing work-related stress home negatively affected people’s love lives. As such, people who “take work home”, constantly answer emails relating to their jobs and sacrifice sex for business may inadvertently damage their own career performance.
Two important neurotransmitters that improve our mood are dopamine and oxytocin. Dopamine is associated with the reward centre in the brain, while oxytocin is the hormone linked to bonding and attachment. When people have sexual intercourse, both of these neurotransmitters are released into the system and the person automatically feels happier.
This can explain why people were feeling more satisfaction at work after a lovemaking session at home: A better attitude produces better results.
To arrive to the conclusions, researchers monitored 159 married employees for 2 weeks. Participants were asked to complete a short questionnaire twice a day. Positive mood after a lovemaking session at home lingered to the next day. Both men and women reported improved moods, engagement at work and job satisfaction after having sex with the spouse.
Researchers concluded that it’s important to make sex a priority, as it has multiple social, psychological and emotional benefits.
“Making a more intentional effort to maintain a healthy sex life should be considered an issue of human sustainability,” said Keith Leavitt, an associate professor in Oregon State University’s College of Business and one of the authors of the research. It also provides a career advantage, as you can see.
