The simplest thing is to register on any of the legitimate non-PPL large Russian dating sites (I mention all 3 of them here), and contact people there. You will quickly understand what is going on.

You don’t even have to pay for a membership — simply send EOIs (expressions of interest) to ladies, which are free.

1. If you are on a legitimate singles site, then responses from ladies will be different depending on the male’s profile you set up. The larger is the age difference, the more refusals you are going to get. Often the refusal comes in the form of no answer — ignoring the request is the type of refusal typical in online dating. Ugly photos or putrid texts will cause a flow of rejects of either type. On sites known for pay-per-message scams, the uglier the photo, the more mails you will be getting: Profiles with poor quality photos look like a perfect target for scammers. It would be also easier for the non-existent a ‘passport-seeking Russian bride’ to get one of such guys, who would definitely fall for that. Typically, scammers are looking for instant cash (profit) and not for some remote benefit in the form of passport.
2. If you decide to upgrade and continue communication with female members who answered positively, you will witness some of them dropping off — this is normal for legitimate dating sites, while people who are ‘after a passport’ or fakes making money on communication (I am talking about the pay-per-letter scam) keep writing no matter what. If you make some appalling offers to legitimate ladies, such as ‘send me your nude photo’ or post them a picture of your dick, good girls drop off. Commission-hungry PPL ‘brides’ or the proverbial huntresses of foreign passports just keep writing.

It’s easy to check whether girls on the dating site are seeking a good man or looking for money (or a passport).

Unless you are paying per message (aka PPL), you are unlikely to be able to pull tricks and see ladies tolerating them.
