Most people in Ukraine still use public transport. In 2021 prices for tickets on public transport are getting 40-50% higher.
Price hike on public transport in Ukraine
It’s likely that the cost of public transport will jump by 40-50% by spring 2021, Finance.ua reported.
Some companies have already announced a forthcoming rise in prices. For instance, some Kyiv (Kiev) companies stated that cost of tickets to “marshrutka” (a mini bus) will jump from 8 to 12 hryvnia (28 to 42 cents in USD).
The cost of tickets may seem low, but wages in Ukraine are also not high. Average wages are only about USD 420 per month.
The price rise may happen already in the first quarter of 2021.
Transport companies explain that they have lost a lot of money because of lockdowns: The volume of passengers dropped by 40-50%. There are also more categories now that have the right to travel on public transport free of charge.
At the same time, companies have to abide by requirements to purchase new vehicles and update their car park, as well as upgrade the system of ticket validation to accept universal passes.
In Kyiv the local administration supports transport companies to maintain low ticket prices. In 2019, over half of the budget of the community transporter was paid by the local administration: 2.4 billion hryvnia out of 4 billion. That’s without the costs of new buses, which are being paid for separately.
The cost of tickets will increase in regions as well. In Sumy the cost of one mini bus ride will go up from 7 to 9 hryvnia.
