Ukrainian economists calculated how much money a woman or man needs to survive. According to financial experts, the minimum amount should be not less than 5000 hryvnia (USD 200). This amount is enough to be able to support oneself in Ukraine for a month.
A Ukrainian woman needs USD 200 per month to survive
Alexey Kutsh, a financial expert from Ukraine, believes that 5000 hryvnia, which is about USD 200, is enough money to feed and house a person for a month.
There is an official sustenance level in Ukraine but it’s way too low, because it’s linked to several types of social payments (pensions etc.), so it’s set depending on how much money is in the country’s budget, rather than how much cash is needed to live.
The official sustenance level in Ukraine is currently 1936 hryvnia (USD 77). It will be raised to 2027 hryvnia in December 2019.
The minimum wage in Ukraine is set at 4174 hryvnia per month, which is $167. This amount is also way lower than what the expert believes is needed to simply survive.
In the budget for 2020 the government set the goal to bring the official sustenance level to 4200 hryvnia monthly. But even such an ambitious goal (in the view of current numbers) is not sufficient to allow people live decently, if their income depends on social payments.
The government proposed to unlink 150 types of social payouts from the official sustenance level, in order to achieve the goal. The only types of social payments that would remain linked to the official sustenance level will be pensions and support for low income families. Currently the minimum pension in Ukraine is 1564 hryvnia ($63) per month.
According to Kutsh, in the countries of Eastern and Central Europe a person needs at least $5 per day to survive, as determined by United Nations. This would equate to USD 150 monthly (3700 hryvnia), just to provide for physiological needs. This amount doesn’t include money for vacations, health and medications, education. To provide for such needs, a person in Ukraine needs 4500-5000 hryvnia monthly.
The government plans to raise the minimum monthly wage in Ukraine to 4723 hryvnia (USD 190) in 2020.
