Ukrainian women marry foreigners fairly often. But most of these foreigners aren’t actually men from the USA, Australia, or even Western Europe.

Do Ukrainian women marry foreigners often?

The answer to this question is “Yes”, but not to the type of foreigners you may think about straight away.

The majority of foreigners that girls from Ukraine marry are the ones who used to live in countries of the former USSR such as Russia, Belarus, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, etc.

Now these former Soviet Union republics are independent countries, with many citizens of these states living in Ukraine (there used to be no requirements on them to have a visa to reside and work there). So, these guys are actually foreigners, but local ladies don’t see them as such, since they speak Russian fluently, and if they have lived in the country for a while, they would be speaking Ukrainian as well.

Do Ukrainian girls marry western men often?

They do, but not as frequent as guys from the former Soviet Union. Possibly, simply because there are not as many westerners in Ukraine who live there permanently, as compared to citizens of other post USSR republics.

For instance, a guy could be a Russian citizen from Moscow, who came to live in one of Ukrainian cities prior to 2014, when the fallout between Ukraine and Russia occurred over the ownership of Crimea: The peninsula used to belong to the Russian Soviet Socialistic Republic, then moved within the borders of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialistic Republic, simply on the order of the Communist Party in 1954 under the leadership of Nikita Khrushchev.

The whole story is too long to explain here, let’s just say most Russians living in Ukraine in 2014 didn’t move back, and there were a lot of them. The same with citizens of other countries who could move between former USSR republics freely.

As comparison, during the times of the Soviet Union foreigners from non-USSR countries had to have a visa to enter Ukraine. (Westerners still have to have a visa to visit Russia, for instance.)

Ukraine is also not as popular place for western expats to live, as compared to Thailand, for instance. As such, there are not as many western men living there, this is why marriages between western men and Ukrainian women are not happening as often as with guys from former USSR republics.

The majority of people who live in Ukraine still marry someone who lives locally, rather than far away. There are marriages among men from far away countries and local girls, but the number is insignificant as compared to the number of international unions between people who reside in the country.

The idea of marrying a beautiful Ukrainian woman seems attractive to many western men, but not many of them actually travel to meet a prospective bride. And without a personal meeting, how can a relationship develop?
