Russian women marry foreigners probably just as often as females of any other country in Europe or America. The world became one global conglomerate of people who move relatively freely between continents and regions. This is why marriages to citizens of other countries are nothing special worldwide.

Do Russian women marry foreigners often?

If we are talking about statistics, there are no precise numbers showing how many females of Russia got hitched with guys holding foreign passports.

• According to GKS.ru, there are 146 million people in Russia.
• In 2018, there were over 893,000 marriages in Russia. In 2017, there were over 1 million marriages (1,049,735). It is a lot of couples that register their nuptials every year.
• Now look at the number of marriage visas granted by various foreign consulates. At most, it would be around a thousand a year (or possibly a couple of thousands). Most likely, much less. Let’s say, it is 10-20 thousand a year between all foreign countries. Then it is only 1-2% of the total number of marriages in Russia, at most.

In general, you may assume, based on anecdotal evidence, that the vast majority of Russian women get married to local men within the borders of their own country. However, these guys could be of a different nationality, which is rather a usual thing in Russia.

Do Russians marry people of other nationalities often?

Yes, unions between people of different nationalities are quite a usual thing in Russia. During Soviet times, such marriages were encouraged.

For instance, Russia has 85 federal subjects, many of which are national republics.

Some of them are giant in size, such as Republic Sakha (Yakutia), which covers the territory stretching over 3 times zones and is officially the largest administrative region in the world. It is larger than Argentina, which is #8 country in the world by the size of its territory. Yakuria is the size of India (without Kashmir).

And this is just one of the national autonomous republics of Russia. There are also Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, Chuvashia, and others. There are also nations in Russia that do not have their own autonomous republics or territories, but still maintain their ethnic identity.

So, marriages of women who are ethnic Russians to other nationalities are very common.

Marriages of Russian women to men who were born in other countries are less common in numbers, but still are nothing out of the ordinary, especially to males from countries of the “near abroad”, i.e. from the republics of the former Soviet Union.

For instance, it is estimated there are over 3 million of Ukrainians that reside on the territory of Russia. Naturally, with such a high number of citizens of Ukraine living in the Russian Federation, there will be some marriages of local women with Ukrainian men, especially given the fact they are able to speak a common language.

The same can be said about citizens of Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Moldova, as well as less known republics such as Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, or Kyrgyzstan.

Do Russian women marry westerners often?

If we look at the share of marriages of Russian females to males from the countries of the European Union, USA, UK, Canada, or Australia, it is not high as compared to the actual number of nuptials to citizens of foreign countries.

However, it is still substantial enough that there are thousands of blogs authored by Russian women married to western men on Instagram.
