888 US dollars is about 25,000 hryvnia, which is considered a rather excellent wage in Ukraine. Only 6,6% of Ukrainian workers earn wages equal or higher than this amount.
Less than 7% of Ukrainians earn over USD 888 a month
According to Finance.ua quoting numbers by Ukrstat, only 6.6% of people in the country earn over 25,000 hryvnia.
At the same time, 19% of Ukrainians earn only 5-6 thousand hryvnia (USD 177-212) per month. The minimum monthly wage in Ukraine is 5,000 hryvnia (USD 177).
One in eight employees still gets payment as “cash in envelope”. This means either not having an official employment contract or getting part of the payment as cash, while officially earning a much lower amount.
Employees do it to avoid high social contributions that have to be paid as a percentage of employees’ wages, while workers agree either because they cannot get another other job, or they too benefit from such an arrangement via discounts on electricity and water bills for underprivileged citizens or not paying taxes as due.
Fines for such violations by employers are quite high: 50,000 hryvnia per person, if the worker started the job without having an official employment contract. The management of the company also can be fined from 8,500 to 17,000 hryvnia.
