Genetic research finds amazing links between specific gene variations and certain qualities of people’s lives. A recent study found a link between a specific gene variation and happiness in a marriage.
DNA that helps marriage satisfaction
People across the globe have different variations of certain genes that make their owners more likely to show certain outcomes in life.
One such gene variation had been recently demonstrated to assist in marriage satisfaction after the wedding.
The gene CD38 in humans may have either “AA”, “AC” or “CC” variations. The latter one had been lined to increased levels of gratitude.
A recent work by Arkansas psychologist Anastasia Makhanova showed that individuals possessing this specific “CC” variation of the gene tended to be happier in a marriage after the wedding.
The study reviewed data of 71 couples (142 newlyweds) with different variances in DNA. The DNA was collected 3 months after the marriage and then the couples were completing questionnaires ever 4 months for 3 years.
On the review, scientists found that individuals with the “CC” variance reported higher degrees of marriage satisfaction. They were more grateful for their partner, as well as were more forgiving and trusting.
Obviously, people with “AA” or “AC” variances aren’t doomed to relationship failures, but they need to be more conscious and aware, put more effort in being grateful, trusting and forgiving, Makhanova pointed out.
Interestingly enough, this shows that there are some hard-wired predispositions to a certain types of behaviour in individual, dependent on their genetic makeup. There is psychological and physical plasticity that helps people to develop desired qualities, but at the same time we all aren’t starting from the same spot.
So, there are obviously some people who are easier to get along with. But we can all do better in relationships, if we want to.
