Ukrstat, the official statistics centre of Ukraine, released the data on internal migration in Ukraine in 2019. Ukrainians move to larger cities like Kyiv (Kiev), Kharkiv (Kharkov), and Odesa (Odessa).
Ukrainians on the move
Moving abroad is a dream for many Ukrainians, but there is also enough internal migration happening all the time.
According to Ukrstat, over 400,000 of Ukrainians moved to another location within 9 months of 2019 (January-September).
- The number of departures: 414,458
- Arrivals: 424,601
Arrivals exceeded departures by over 10 thousand.
The statistics is derived from people registering their official place of residence, which all Ukrainians must have in order to get free medical, government subsidies and other benefits.
How does it happen that more people are arriving as compared to departing? There could be many possible reasons. For instance, Ukrainians who lived without a registered place of residence got a permanent home, people who lived outside of Ukraine returned, etc.
- Kyiv region registered the largest number of newcomers: 43,358.
- The city of Kyiv (viewed as a separate from the region) registered 42,659 new residents.
- Kharkiv welcomed 37,027 residents.
- Odesa recorded 26,981 newcomers.
- Nearly the same number of people moved to Lviv: 26,056.
- Dnipro recorded 25,860 newcomers.
Usually people move internally to study, looking for work, or getting married.
Net migration
At the same time, most regions in Ukraine registered more departures than arrivals. Only a handful of locations had more people arriving than departing.
- Kyiv region leads the rating with net migration of 19,771 people.
- The city of Kyiv netted 9,881 extra residents.
- Odesa attracted 5533 extra residents.
- Kharkiv scored 4,105 more residents.
- Poltava registered 499 more people than left the region.
- Net migration to Lviv: 157 residents.
Other locations recorded more departures than arrivals.
Larger cities are where the best universities are located. It is also where jobs are easier to find. The capital of Ukraine leads the desirability rating, which is not surprising. The average wage in Kyiv is nearly double the size of the regular pay check in regions.
