Tips to visit Ukraine
By Andy Singer
I traveled to Ukraine in December 2018. This was after the most recent incident between Russia and Ukraine and just a few days after the implementation of martial law in 10 districts. Kyiv, of course, was not under martial law. Here are my suggestions for other tourists and I hope they will be helpful.
- Have Viber and/or Whatsapp on your smartphone so you can communicate. Everyone uses these apps to message and even to place calls.
- Get familiar with Uber and have the app on your phone as well. Especially in Kyiv it works perfectly. I believe most taxi drivers still do not speak English well and if you’re using Uber you won’t have to worry about the language barrier. You’ll still get to your destination.
- I also recommend using TripAdvisor. I have found dozens of restaurants and have not yet been disappointed with the highly rated ones on the app. Many are local places with local prices.
- Try using Airbnb for an apartment rental. I’ve used three different hosts and have been extremely satisfied. Look for hosts with a lot of good ratings; several hundred in fact. All of my apartments I’ve rented over the past two years were within walking distance of Independence Square.
- Be sure to have at least one credit card with a chip and not Discover. That won’t work in Ukraine. My Visa cards worked perfectly and most don’t have foreign transaction fees.
- Google translate – YES.
- STEP Program – YES.
- Also have the local number for the Embassy in your phone.
Things to do in Ukraine
There are a lot of things to do, though there are fewer during the winter when it’s really cold, snowy, rainy etc.
But you can find things to do other than visiting malls and shopping or spending all your time in coffee houses or bars.
There are movie theatres, bowling, the Opera House, trampolines, escape rooms, Virtual Reality games, roller skating, amusement rides, painting and craft classes, traditional Ukrainian cooking classes… the list goes on. Talk about it with the ladies and go out!
Dating Ukrainian women
As for treating the ladies, my suggestion is find some flowers and candy.
I can say from my experience that I have not yet met a lady that doesn’t like 11,13 or 15 red roses and some Ferrero Rocher or Raffaello candies.
I found those gifts are definitely appropriate for a first or second date setting and you can go wrong if you try to choose a specific perfume for someone with whom you don’t know a lot about their tastes.
I’ve enjoyed my visits; three since September 2018, and meeting a few very nice ladies.
Of course, I believe that people are still people. And regardless of the distance and cultural differences, you still have to make the personal connection, feel the spark of romance, and ultimately have the same desires and expectations before you can develop a serious relationship.
Still working on it! Wish me luck!
I wish anyone reading this the same.
Cheers!

These are some great tips. Especially the Uber one. Uber is a god send to us foreigners that can’t speak russian or ukranian that are going to Kiev. Some of the cars that come to pick you up have UBER in english on the side of them so they are easy to see. Also you can pay the driver in cash and you know exactly how much it will be in hryvnia from the app on your phone. Also the great thing is the app will work with just a regular 3G connection no ukrainian phone card needed for me… Read more »
