Major events of 2018 that Russians remember
WCIOM.ru asked locals what do they think of the outgoing year, the major events that they remember and their hopes for the future.
Regarding world events, Russians think that the 5 most important things that happened on the global scale were:
- Soccer World Cup in Russia
- Events in Syria
- Opening of the Kerch bridge, connecting the mainland Russia with the recently acquired Crimea
- Pension reform in Russia
- Events in Ukraine
When asked about the major events in Russia, the list of important things looked very similar.

- Presidential elections
- VAT increase
2018 World Soccer Cup is absolutely the main important event for the country on the global and local scale, it appears. Citizens of Russia are very proud of having this major tournament on their home soil and showing off to foreigners their hospitality and accomplishments, beautiful cities and newly built stadiums. There was so much publicity inside the country that locals think on the global scale it was an important event, too.
How Russians feel about 2019 New Year’s Eve
Most people who took part in the survey have good feelings about the end of 2018 and the upcoming 2019 year.
- 39% of survey respondents indicated being in a good mood and having an optimistic outlook.
- 38% of respondents don’t have some specially good feelings, but also nothing negative.
- 21% said they are rather pessimistic.
Nearly half of respondents (49%) are expecting changes for the better in 2019. 27% of survey-takers feel confident and calm, while 19% of respondents reported feeling fatigued and empty.
Results of 2018
57% of locals reported that the past year was successful for them, while 40% evaluated the results of 2018 as negative. People were asked about results for themselves and their families.
For Russia as a whole, people are less optimistic about the annual results. Only 33% of respondents think it was a successful year for the country, while 60% of the people who answered questions consider the past year difficult or bad.
Expectations for 2019
In their expectations for the new year the respondents were divided.
- 50% of them think it will be good.
- 47% of respondents think it will be bad.
Last year people were much more positive. 69% of respondents expected 2018 to be good and only 27% thought it would be a bad year. In just 12 months, people’s optimism for the future dropped substantially.
