According to Levada, 13% of Russian citizens migrated within the country in the last 5 years.
Internal migration in Russia
A recent poll by Levada showed that Russians don’t move that much within the country. Only 13% of respondents moved within the last 5 years.
Among respondents who moves, the largest part moved within the same region (55%). Only 42% of people moved between the regions.
The main reason for migration was cited as job-related. People moved to get a job: 40% of the respondents who moved cited this reason.
The major motivator here was the desire to earn more (41%) as well as the loss of work coupled with the inability to find a new job at the place of residence (25%).
Other reasons included:
- Desire to improve living standards
- Simply wanting to move
- Job transfer
The most mobile category of respondents was aged 18-24. Within this category, 24% of people moved within Russia. Single people move more often than the ones who are married or in a relationship (16% vs. 12%).

That’s true. And I am among those, who don’t move within the country often. I have not been in other cities for 5 years. Firstly, it’s because of lack of money. The tickets for planes are very expensive. Also, I have no big need to.
