Mental illness and neurological disorders are something that affects about 1 person in 4 at some point of their life worldwide, according to WHO. Just like many other illnesses it’s something that happens in your body, and you have no control over it.
If you are dating someone, when and how do you tell them about your mental illness?
Some points how to tell a person you are dating about it:
- You need to be alone, with no one able to overhear you (quiet time together at a dinner at home, a walk in a park). Usually an opportunity will present itself when it feels natural. Maybe after you have seen a movie or a TV show that’s related to the topic.
- Tell your partner you have a mental illness and ask if they know what this means. Have facts available to explain to them what it is, what causes it.
- Don’t alert them that you “need to tell them something important” (bad, scary, etc). Simply tell them.
- Explain how this may affect your behaviour.
While it’s not a first date topic, if you are with someone for a while, they should probably know about it.
If you are dating online, and you have a reasonable depth of relationship over a period of time, you may want to do it by Skype face-to-face. Your partner will be able to see you are still the same person.
Again, remember that 1 in 4 people has it in some extent over the period of their lifespan, so it’s not something distant from people’s daily lives.
